It has a grammatical structure all its own, and is written in an alphabet based on Hebrew characters. Scholars and universities classify Yiddish as a Germanic language, though some have questioned that classification. They had their own international language known as Ladino or Judesmo, which is a hybrid of medieval Spanish and Hebrew in much the same way that Yiddish combines German and Hebrew. At its height less than a century ago, Yiddish was understood by an estimated 11 million of the world’s 18 million Jews, and many of them spoke Yiddish as their primary language. Yiddish has fallen on hard times, a victim of both assimilation and murder. Today, less than a quarter of a million people in the United States speak Yiddish, about half of them in New York.

Of all the accomplishments of the ancient Middle East, the invention of the alphabet is probably the greatest. While pre-alphabetic systems of writing in the Old World became steadily more phonetic, they were still exceedingly cumbersome, and the syllabic systems that gradually replaced them… Theories of the origin of the alphabet The evolution of the alphabet involved two important achievements.
The first was the step taken by a group of Semitic-speaking people, perhaps the Phoenicians, on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean between and bce. This was the invention of a consonantal writing system known as North Semitic. The second was the invention, by the Greeks, of characters for representing vowels. This step occurred between and bce. While some scholars consider the Semitic writing system an unvocalized syllabary and the Greek system the true alphabet, both are treated here as forms of the alphabet.
Over the centuries, various theories have been advanced to explain the origin of alphabetic writing, and, since Classical times, the problem has been a matter of serious study.

I also thought about us just going for Dinner followed by Dancing at a Discotheque but with so many nights out planned for December I just knew neither of us would really fancy it. So, half arsed D Date it was. I must be a terrible human because Apple obviously noticed that I write the word fuck a lot more than I write the word duck…. Now for those of you not familiar with the concept of Alphabet Dating, it basically does what it says on the tin. You and your other half take it in turns to plan a date for the other using the letters of the alphabet for guidance. And from there you can make your own rules! We started off trying to plan a date for every other week but this proved challenging when work, life etc got in the way. We also had to take a rather lengthy break during a particularly stressful time when we were buying our first house and I was unemployed so not ideal!
However, for us so far at least! The pressure of the first date fell on me and I quickly decided that we should go for afternoon tea. Tenuous I know, but I did say the rules were flexible Anyway, I am rambling already… we ended up in the Cotswolds, spending the night in Stow on the Wold, eating at the gorgeous Daylesford and generally having a grand old time. We even managed to stop off in a small market town for tea and a scone so we did have afternoon tea after all… B is for Beach.
Waiting on the son to break through you might say!! Dulwich Park had for us been a place we visited a lot whilst the kids were growing up, we would head there most weekends to play frisbee, use the play area or to get an ice cream, after the kids had run around it. Our kids four between us are now all grown up, with the youngest being in his first year at university already!!!
As we arrived in Dulwich, the rain that had started on the way turned lighter and we managed to head into the park without a brolly, although the sky was still pretty dark. I think we had forgotten what a beautiful park it was, and the size of it.

These definitely drew me in. Just the idea of dating by the alphabet sounded like a fun book. I loved Serena and her friends. I wasn’t so wild about her sister or how she acts. Serena lost her boyfriend in a crash years ago. She survived the accident, was in a coma for a while and then had to relearn how to walk and live her life. Now 5 years later, her friends and sister are all either married or engaged and they think she needs to start dating.
This leads to the Alphabet Dating plan. Even though, she doesn’t want to, Serena agrees and starts on a merry-go-round of dating. Honestly, I am disappointed. Because I would have given this a higher rating except for a couple reasons.

The largest number of scholars favours the Latin alphabet as this template, [11lthough the Elder Futhark and even the Greek alphabet have their supporters. The Latin alphabet is the primary contender mainly because its influence at the required period 4th century is most easily established, being widely used in neighbouring Roman Britannia , while the runes in the 4th century were not very widespread even in continental Europe.
In Ireland and in Wales, the language of the monumental stone inscriptions is termed Primitive Irish. The transition to Old Irish , the language of the earliest sources in the Latin alphabet, takes place in about the 6th century. Theories of origin[ [ edit ]ol. Scholars such as Carney and MacNeill have suggested that ogham was first created as a cryptic alphabet, designed by the Irish so as not to be understood by those with a knowledge of the Latin alphabet.
The argument is that the sounds of Primitive Irish were regarded as difficult to transcribe into the Latin alphabet, so the invention of a separate alphabet was deemed appropriate. A possible such origin, as suggested by McManus A variation is that the alphabet was first invented, for whatever reason, in 4th-century Irish settlements in west Wales after contact and intermarriage with Romanised Britons with a knowledge of the Latin alphabet. Macalister was influential at one time, but finds little favour with scholars today.
According to this theory, the alphabet was transmitted in oral form or on wood only, until it was finally put into a written form on stone inscriptions in early Christian Ireland. Later scholars are largely united in rejecting this theory, however, [2rimarily because a detailed study of the letters[ [ citation needed ]hows that they were created specifically for the Primitive Irish of the early centuries AD.
